To understand how to mulitply and divide by 10 is a very important part of our base 10 number system.

Sliders allow students to see the shift in place value resulting from a number either being x or ÷ by a power of 10.

Student sliders measure approximately: 16.5 cm x 6 cm (6.5 in x 2.5 in) with a strip to slide, on which a number is written.

Each slider is double sided: On one side a 10-frame to model either 10 x an amount or dividing an amount by 10 (÷ 10 or × 1/10), the reverse side to show the slide effect on the place value of a number when x or ÷ by 10.

Description

You will never need to say "Add a zero" again when you actually mean 10x larger! Using the words "add a zero" creates misconceptions and is a rule that fails when mulitpying and dividing by decimals.

Student sliders come with either no text above the place values names or at each position a 10 x or ÷10 with arrows in the direction of the slide.

The strip used to slide the number across is designed to be written on with a white board marker which easily rubs off after use.

In the bottom of each corner is either "Left" or "Right" to reduce the cognitive load on learners when sliding a number.
